A medieval Armenian cloister Surb-Khach (in Armenian “Holy Cross”) is located in vicinity of the town of Staryi Krim in the beautiful valley surrounded by high beeches and hornbeams. The monastery was founded in 1338 on a shadow slope of Sacred Mountain and the monks lived there till the beginning of the 20th century. The architectural complex consists of the Surb-Nshan Temple (1358), rabbet with a tower, internal courtyards, canteen, remains of scriptorium library and an ecclesiastical school. There is a park with two fountains and a hostel for pilgrims and a small cafe on the territory of cloister. Every year at the beginning of August the Crimean Armenians come there to celebrate their national holiday Vardavar. The keeper of the cloister offers various excursions around the East Crimea region connected with the culture and history of the Crimean Armenians.
